Matching foundations

20 January 2014

This is such a difficult thing we face, that is when you start wearing and exploring foundations, all these questions.. How do you pick the right one for you, your skin tone, colour, type..

We may find our self down the aisles of Superdrug trying out foundations on our hand under the most not natural lighting and thing oh yes I found my shade to come home and find arghhh ! What a waste of money that was..
This is just a little guide to help you if your new to foundations or can't figure it out.. first of all if you go to the high street shops get someone to help you like the assistants (I know there hardly is anyone but I've noticed that's starting to slowly improve) if not take a friend with you.  Swatch it on your jaw line this is usually a good match with your body and face.

First tip is to figure out your undertone, most undertones are neutral, yellow toned and pink toned, this is basic but most important because you could end up looking ashy.

Once you know your undertone think about your skin type, if you have oily skin you don't want a super dewy foundation no no no, therefore this is very important, or instead of given flawless skin the foundation will do the complete opposite. Your either dry, normal, combination, oily... There are matte to dewy finish foundations available.

You want to think about the coverage, I know some people like thick coverage as they have blemishes to cover or just like the thickness, where as some people like the complete opposite and want a more natural finish or a very thin layer, think whether you want a tinted moisturiser or foundation, or if concealer can help instead of a thick of foundation. There's light, medium or thick coverage. Think of blemishes, marks, redness, discolouration..

Then look at some shades you think you are and test it on your jaw line, the one that blends in is a good match, if you are confused between a few shades, take samples home or walk outside and look in the mirror as shop lightings are rubbish! Most of all you don't want to get the wrong shade, this will mean you will either look ashy or grey and ill, not a very nice look in my opinion.
